About Dr David Johnson Tampa

With more than 30 years of medical experience including services in and around Tampa, Florida, Dr. David R. Johnson is currently a professor at the University of South Florida’s Center for Toxicology and Risk Assessment, where he has contributed to educating students learning occupational medicine. A longtime employee of the Florida Department of Health (FDOH), he served as an administrator, medical director, medical executive director, and chief of the Bureau of Environmental Epidemiology. Tampa’s Dr. David R. Johnson oversaw a wide range of programs at the FDOH, all of which impacted public health and the environment.

Some of the large-scale issues Dr. Johnson oversaw at the FDOH included environmental issues of public health such as sewage treatment and waste disposal inspections. For example, one of these programs inspected and issued permits for residential and commercial onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems and included repair recommendations of damaged or failing systems. He also provided oversight for the inspections of water sanitation systems and medical service facilities to ensure that their operations were intact and fell under the necessary regulatory guidelines.

Prior to his work with the FDOH, Dr. David Johnson ran a private practice and a hospital based practice in occupational and environmental medicine and was chief of a primary care clinic and held flight surgeon status with the U.S. Air Force. He and his wife also played on the music worship team at the New Horizons Church.
